A play-based learning approach in Burnaby

Royal Roots Early Learning is planned for Gilmore Place, Level 3, in North Burnaby, Burnaby, BC. It is for children up to age 12. Opening is planned for 2027. The centre is not open. Licensing status will be published before opening. The approach is professional play-based care, a personalized learning plan for each child, and optional enrichment. Hands-on play comes first. Technology is an enrichment choice, not the whole day. Parent education is part of the same plan and has its own page.

Play first

Royal Roots describes the day as play-based and gamified: children learn through play that has a purpose, with art, music, outdoor play, and quiet time in the mix. The goal stated on the site is confident children who are ready for what comes next, from the first months through age 12.

Observation during ordinary play is how educators are planned to learn each child's strengths. With parent consent, partner professionals can add age-appropriate developmental screening. That screening is optional. It never replaces a medical or psychological diagnosis. Royal Roots does not give IQ tests and does not diagnose conditions.

A plan for each child

A personalized learning plan is planned for every child and is meant to be revised as the child grows. The plan is the thread between infant care, preschool, and school-age care. It is how the centre says it will be an education centre and not only a supervision space.

Inclusive participation is part of the plan. The site says Royal Roots aims to work with families and qualified professionals so children with diverse learning needs can take part. A separate special-needs staffing model, a ratio, and a fee for extra support have not been published.

Hands-on learning, then technology

Enrichment is planned in literacy, numeracy, coding, robotics, and languages, plus movement, sport, and wellbeing through partner organizations. For ages 6 to 12 the site describes a STEM academy with six strands: technology, robotics, programming, math, science, and language. Those strands are project-based and optional.

The technology stance is hands-on first. Coding and robotics are planned as things children build and try, inside an optional class. They are not a replacement for the play-based care program, and they are not required. Prices for enrichment are not published. The site says enrichment is separately priced when a family opts in. The amount will be published before opening.

Parents are part of the approach

Parent education sits beside the child's plan. Prenatal circles, newborn classes, postpartum groups, and time for caregivers are planned and described on the parents page. Partners and caregivers are welcome in that description. Those sessions are not open today.

Nothing in this approach is offered as a current class. Opening is planned for 2027. Licensing status will be published before opening.
